Conservation Officer Report | Sports & Recreation | Central MN News

The Minnesota DNR provided the following summaries of last week's activities by Conservation Officers:

CO Scott Staples (Carlton) issued a permit for a car killed bobcat and finished up an ongoing investigation from last fall which resulted in charges for angling without a license and hunting waterfowl without a federal migratory waterfowl stamp. Fishing activity has slowed in the area with very few anglers found trying their luck in the area. Snowmobiling activity has picked up with recent snow falls. Enforcement action was taken for speed, no safety certificate, and registration violations. Time was also spent prepping boats for the upcoming boating and flood seasons.

CO Jeff Humphrey (Cromwell) worked snowmobile and angling enforcement during the week. Area Snowmobile trail conditions were in very good condition throughout the week.? Snowmobile activity was moderate. Area lakes were checked for angling activity. Some anglers were reporting mixed catches of bluegill and crappie. Online training was completed. A collector snowmobile permit was reviewed. Specialized equipment was prepped for anticipated flood deployment.

CO Dustie Heaton (Willow River) attended training in St. Paul. She followed up on investigations and reports. Heaton answered questions regarding ATV registration, spring trapping and putting corn down ice angling holes. She received complaints of ongoing littering. The person doing the littering seems to be targeting the reporting party. ?

CO Bret Grundmeier (Hinckley) continued to get some snow in the area which has kept the snowmobiling activity going on area trails. Main trails like the Munger were in good condition. Snowfalls have also made it a challenge for anglers to get out on area lakes. Quite a few four-wheel-drive vehicles have been getting stuck while trying to make it to some fishing spots.

CO Eugene Wynn (Pine City) attended a couple meetings during the week. One involved upcoming firearms safety classes, and the other centered on Mille Lacs Lake issues. CO Wynn also checked anglers throughout the week. Snow conditions on the lakes around Pine City have worsened with the snow received during the week. Even 4x4 trucks are now having a hard time getting around on area lakes. Those out are finding a few sunfish and crappies biting. CO Wynn received a call of a? bear ?stuck? in a culvert. After checking on the animal, it appeared to have made a culvert at a road intersection its winter hibernation spot. ?

WREO Rob Haberman reports investigating a possible wetland violation in Aitkin County. WREO Haberman also worked on case updates for WCA violations and public waters in his work area. WREO Haberman also worked on snowmobile and fishing enforcement throughout the area. WREO Haberman also met with tribal wardens on the upcoming fishing season on Mille Lacs.

CO Bob Mlynar (Aitkin) worked snowmobile enforcement throughout the week. Violations he found were snowmobiles operating off trial, speed and failing to stop at road crossings. He handled an Incidental fur report and gave a law presentation at a turkey hunting clinic.

CO Mike Lee (Crosslake) checked anglers this past week that were reporting slow activity for pan fish. Snowmobile activity remains high in the area with what seems like new snow being added daily. Officer Lee assisted with a lost youth snowmobiler in the Crosslake area. The youth was located at her residence a few hours after being reported missing. Enforcement action was taken this past week for snowmobile speed, registration issues, snowmobile safety certification, and careless operation.

CO Nikki Shoutz (Pine River) tracked down an owner of a fish shelter still on a Pine River lake (unoccupied) since the March 4 deadline. It appeared to be a miscommunication with a friend who was to remove it. When asked why there was no license on it ? he said that when he put it out three months ago, it was just going to be an ?overnight fishing trip.? Enforcement action was taken. Assistance with snowmobile enforcement was also provided at the annual Crosslake St. Patrick?s Day parade. Enforcement action was taken for failing to display registration, failing to stop at road crossings and operating snowmobile with no snowmobile safety permit.

CO Tim Collette (Pequot Lakes) worked this past week on snowmobile enforcement. Snowmobiling trespass complaints, speed and careless operation violation were investigated. He assisted neighboring Officer Posner with a complaint of a fish house left on the lake. He responded to a call of a small owl sitting on a garbage can at a rural residence. The property owner thought the bird was hurt because it would not fly. CO Collette approached the bird and the owl looked at him and flew away. It appeared to have been sleeping and flew away when CO Collette woke him up by walking over.

CO Greg Verkuilen (Garrison) checked area lakes where deep snow and lack of plowed roads made access difficult for anglers. Snowmobilers were checked enjoying the best conditions in several years. He also attended a meeting regarding tribal harvest. ?

CO Chris Tetrault (Isle) completed field training and has been stationed in Isle. The Officer monitored ice fishing activity; activity was low. Snowmobile trails are in great condition and snowmobile activity began to increase as it got closer to the weekend; enforcement action was taken for failure to display valid registration. The Officer discussed firearm, boat and ice safety with parents at the Isle Early Childhood Family Education class. A complaint was addressed involving dogs chasing deer.

CO Scott Fitzgerald (Malmo) reports attending a tribal warden meeting in regards to Mille Lacs lake during the week. Fishermen were checked out on Mille Lacs Lake with most having little success. Patrol was done on area snowmobile trails with lots of activity with the recent snow. A TIP complaint and a dumping complaint investigation were completed during the week. Calls of fishing law related questions, illegal digging in a wetland and a dead owl were fielded. Enforcement action for the week included: no snowmobile safety certificate, snowmobile speed, allow illegal operation of a snowmobile by a juvenile, no state trail sticker and failure to display current snowmobile registration.

CO Luke Croatt (Wealthwood) checked anglers and snowmobilers during the week and weekend. Trail conditions were excellent and with more snow forecasted should remain that way. Fishing has been slow with a few perch caught along with crappies. Many fishermen were asking about upcoming regulations on Mille Lacs which have not been set for the season. Time was spent with neighboring officer patrolling area snowmobile trails, enforcement action taken on a variety of snowmobile violations.

CO Randy Posner (Brainerd) reports there have only been a few ice anglers out trying their luck. The heavy snow has made it difficult for fishermen to get around. The snow has been great for the snowmobilers and they have been out in full force. He assisted a snowmobiler who had a mechanical problem with his machine on Gull Lake. Violations observed were speed, expired registration and trespass on agriculture fields. He worked on a report of a fish house still out on Sylvan Lake. The owner removed his name and license but left some personal property behind the case is being investigated.

CO Jim Guida (Brainerd) patrolled on snowmobile this past week. Enforcement work was done monitoring speeds of snowmobiles on the trails. Most operators were staying at or below the 50 miles per hour speed limit. Operators reported having near misses with deer on the trail. One operator even indicated that a deer had brushed his coat. One can assume that the groomed trails have been offering deer some relief from the deep snow. Enforcement action was taken on snowmobile registration violations and allowing youth operator to operate snowmobiles illegally.
