St. David?s girls? basketball dominates Grace Christian

RALEIGH - The St. David?s girls? basketball team controlled Monday?s game against Grace Christian from the tipoff, cruising to a 61-24 win.St. David?s Coach Brooke Johnson said despite a 29-11 lead at halftime, her team didn?t play up to its potential in the first half, but picked it up later on. The Warriors extended its lead to 30 points by the end of the third quarter.?The first half, I felt like we didn?t go as hard as we could, but the second half we were better,? Johnson said. ?We want to try to be as aggressive as we can. I feel like we?re better when we are trying to be aggressive.?The Warriors dominated a game played largely inside the paint, led by freshman Tiffany Bartholomew, who scored a game-high 31 points.Bartholomew played for the St. David?s varsity team as an eighth grader, but has adapted more to the game this year and is stronger around the basket, Johnson said.?With this team, I know we?re young, but we?re just trying to work hard and get better every day,? Johnson said. ?We?re in the driver seat in the conference right now and everyone?s looking to beat us, so the goal now it to go out and finish strong.?Grace Christian, conversely, is still looking for its first win of the year.First-year coach Danielle Virgil said the Eagles team, which has as many freshmen as seniors, is learning through its growing pains. ?These girls have grown tremendously in terms of learning the game and IQ,? Virgil said. ?They?re getting used to a new style, but we?re making sure every game they learn something.?Pranaya Boru led the Eagles with nine points.
