Physicists study fast-moving electrons in graphene as a model laboratory for massless particles
A team of physicists from Europe and South Africa showed that electrons moving randomly in graphene can mimic the dynamics of particles such as cosmic rays, despite travelling at a fraction of their speed, in a paper about to be published in EPJ B.
Andrey Pototsky and colleagues made use of their knowledge of graphene, which is made of a carbon layer, one atom thick, and packed in a honeycomb lattice pattern. In such material the interaction of electrons with atoms changes the effective mass of the electrons. As a result, the energy of electrons in graphene becomes similar to the photon energy.
Therefore, electrons in graphene can be regarded as behaving like cosmic rays, which belong to a family known as ultra-relativistic particles, even though their actual velocity is one hundred times lower than the speed of light.
The authors employed the classical equations used to describe random motionso-called Brownian motionto study the dynamics of electrons within the confines of their graphene mini-laboratory. They considered different graphene chip geometries and subjected them to changing conditions that affect the way these electrons diffuse through the material, such as temperature and electric field strength.
Going one step further, the authors were able to rectify electron fluctuations and to control the electron motion itself, from an unusual chaotic type of motion to a periodic movement, by varying the electric field.
Future work would experimentally demonstrate how variation of the temperature can be used positively to enhance the performance of graphene chips by gaining a greater control over electron transport. Such graphene mini-labs could also ultimately help us to understand the dynamics of matter and anti-matter in cosmic rays.

Mass. firm tied to closed pharmacy issues recall
BOSTON (AP) ? A company with the same founders as the specialty pharmacy linked to deadly meningitis outbreak says it's recalling all its products.
In a statement Wednesday, Ameridose said the voluntary recall comes after FDA officials told the company it must improve its sterility testing. The Westborough company says it has no reports of problems with its products, or any impurities, but issued the recall "out of an abundance of caution."
The company did not say how many products it is recalling.
Ameridose agreed to shut down for inspection earlier this month after tainted steroids from the New England Compounding Center were linked to an outbreak that has killed 28.
Ameridose and NECC were both founded by brothers-in-law Barry Cadden and Greg Conigliaro. Ameridose says it is a separate entity with distinct management.

Funeral plans announced for Catawba teens who died in wreck ...
The families of two Catawba County teens who died after driving off a bridge on a trip to Myrtle Beach have planned joint memorial services this Saturday in Mooresville.
Jake Ziegler, 18, and Ray Pierce, 17, seniors at Bandys High School in Catawba County, left a party in the early hours of Oct. 13. They told friends they were going to take Ziegler?s 2006 Pontiac G6 to Myrtle Beach, about four hours away, to watch the sunrise.
When they didn?t return, authorities and families began searching ? retracing the teens? path to the beach, handing out fliers at the Carolina Panthers game, even renting a helicopter to search for the green car.
The car and the boys? bodies were discovered in marshy water off Interstate 20, just east of Columbia.
A Memorial service for the teens will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 3 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel in Mooresville. The family will receive visitors following the service.
Pierce?s family is also holding a funeral Mass at noon on Friday, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, the teens? families encourage people to make memorials to Community United Effort (C.U.E.) Center for Missing Persons, which assisted in the two-week search for the Ziegler and Ray. The center?s mailing address is: P.O. Box 12714, Wilmington, North Carolina 28405.

NEW YORK (AP) ? After all the economy-focused campaign talk, voters in some states will get a chance on Election Day to sound off on intriguing topics that the presidential rivals ignored, including death-penalty repeal, marijuana legalization and assisted suicide.
In all, there are 176 measures on the Nov. 6 ballots in 38 states, according to the Initiative and Referendum Institute at the University of Southern California.
Many are technical proposals by legislators related to state finances and regulations. Others, however, are dramatic and highly divisive measures that would ? if approved ? be historic milestones for U.S. social policy.
Any of three states ? Maine, Maryland and Washington ? could become the first to legalize same-sex marriage through a popular vote, a potentially momentous development that could influence future Supreme Court deliberations on the issue. Thus far, all 32 states with referendums on gay marriage have rebuffed it, while the six states that have legalized it did so through legislation or court orders.
Washington is in another three-state group, with Oregon and Colorado, that could become the first to legalize recreational use of marijuana ? allowing adults to possess small amounts of pot under a regimen of state regulation and taxation. The Oregon proposal appears to be fizzling, but the Washington and Colorado measures have led in opinion polls and are backed by wealthy out-of-state donors.
A "yes" vote in any of the states could set up a showdown with the federal government, which continues to consider pot an illegal drug. The Justice Department has declined to elaborate on how it would react.
Two other states ? Arkansas and Massachusetts ? will be deciding whether to allow marijuana use for medical reasons, as 17 states have done previously. Arkansas would be the first southern state to join the group.
Another emotionally charged measure in Massachusetts would legalize physician-assisted suicide. Massachusetts would join Oregon and Washington in allowing terminally ill patients to obtain lethal doses of medication if doctors say they have six months or less to live.
The measure raises "the most profound questions that an individual can wrestle with," said the Rev. Tim Kutzmark, of Reading, Mass., a Unitarian Universalist minister who shifted from a foe of assisted suicide to a supporter after watching a close friend slowly die from Parkinson's disease in 2002.
As is often the case, California has numerous attention-getting measures, including one that would abolish the state's death penalty. If approved, the more than 720 inmates on California's death row would have their sentences converted to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
While 17 states have ended capital punishment, most did so through legislative action. Only in Oregon, in 1964, did voters choose to repeal the death penalty, and they later reversed themselves to reinstate it.
Another contentious measure in California would require most genetically engineered processed foods and produce sold in supermarkets and other outlets to be labeled as such. These GMO foods also will be prohibited from carrying the term "natural" on their labels.
Consumer groups and the organic food industry support the measure as a way of giving shoppers more information about what they purchase and consume, while many retailers are opposed, saying grocery bills would increase. Food and chemical conglomerates, including Monsanto Co. and DuPont Co., have contributed nearly $41 million to defeat the measure ? close to 10 times what its supporters have raised.
California's epic budget problems also are on the ballot, in the form of rival tax-increase proposals.
Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown's Proposition 30, aimed at averting $6 billion in budget cuts, mostly to education, would raise income taxes on people who make more than $250,000 a year for seven years and raise the state sales tax by a quarter cent for four years. Proposition 38, sponsored by wealthy civil rights attorney Molly Munger, would raise income taxes on nearly all earners and send the money directly to local school districts, bypassing the Legislature.
California labor unions are the target of another measure, aimed at depriving them of tens of millions of dollars they use to finance campaigns and political organizing.
Proposition 32 would prohibit corporations and unions from collecting money for state political activities from employees or members through paycheck deductions. It would hit unions hardest: Corporations don't typically deduct money from employee pay for state political activities, but unions do use the practice to fill their political coffers.
The battle over Proposition 32 follows conflicts in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and elsewhere where Republican efforts to weaken organized labor have produced protests and political tumult.
In Michigan, labor unions are fighting back. On Nov. 6, voters there will be deciding on a first-of-its-kind ballot initiative that would put collective bargaining rights in the state constitution ? and out of lawmakers' reach.
If successful, the strategy could serve as a model for other states, encouraging unions to bypass hostile officeholders and take their case directly to voters.
"Labor is on the defensive," said Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal research organization in Washington, D.C. "This could very well be a turning point if the people of Michigan affirm collective bargaining."
Other notable ballot measures:
? In Alabama, Montana, Florida and Wyoming, voters have an opportunity to weigh in on one key aspect of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in the form of Republican-backed measures stating that no individual or business can be compelled to participate in a health care system. The measures are viewed as largely symbolic; they would violate federal law and any attempt to enforce them would likely wind up in the courts.
? Maryland voters will decide whether to uphold or overturn a new state law allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at public colleges if their parents have paid taxes and if the students have attended Maryland schools.
? Illegal immigrants are the target of a measure in Montana, placed on the ballot by lawmakers, that would require people who receive certain state services to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.
? A measure in Ohio would create a 12-person citizen commission to draw up legislative and congressional districts, taking that power away from legislators.
? Oklahoma voters will decide whether to abolish affirmative action programs in state government and education. That's a step already taken in Arizona, California, Michigan, Nebraska and Washington.
? Minnesotans will decide on an amendment that would require showing a photo ID in order to vote.
? A proposal in Missouri would raise the state cigarette tax to 90 cents per pack, up from a lowest-in-the-nation 17 cents per pack.

Polar bear sanctuary on iceberg

A hitherto unknown polar bear sanctuary in the Arctic has been discovered by the makers of a BBC documentary.
An estimated 20 of the bears were seen on the Peterman Iceberg in Baffin Bay, 50km off the Canadian coast.
For most of the year, polar bears live on the frozen sea water where they hunt seals.
So the finding challenges received wisdom about where polar bears spend the summer months, when the sea ice melts.
The sanctuary was discovered during the filming of BBC Two's Operation Iceberg.
It had been assumed that polar bears had to move on to the land during the summer, in this case, Baffin Island.
But now it is clear that not all polar bears return to land. Some spend the summer months surviving on large tabular icebergs off the coast.
Presenter Chris Packham commented: "What's there for them is security, and I think they are taking advantage of that. So I think they are living on this iceberg to stay safe, and just wait for the sea ice to come back in."
American biologist and polar bear expert Steven Amstrup said this was the first time he had heard of the bears living in large numbers on a tabular iceberg out at sea.
Dr Keith Nicholls of the British Antarctic Survey was also on the expedition. He said: "In recent years we've been seeing a lot more big tabular icebergs come off the Greenland ice sheet and they're now ending up in Baffin Bay."
Polar bears are hunted by humans on both the mainlands of Greenland and Canada so the icebergs may enable the bears to remain safe from human hunting.

Superstorm Sandy Liveblog: Moving slowly, still a big storm

Sandy continues to churn and covers almost half the United States. In Chicago and Wisconsin, meteorologists are warning of high waves churning up in Lake Michigan today ? as high as 27 feet.
The center of Sandy is moving at about 15 mph through western Pennsylvania in a west-northwesterly direction, and slowing. It is expected to turn north into western New York state tonight and into Canada on Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center is warning of gale force (39 to 54 mph) winds Tuesday across a swath of the US from Virginia to New England. East Coast storm surges could still be as much as four feet at high tide, which may not sound like much given the surges of the past 24 hours but remember that the peak surge in Battery Point in NYC during Hurricane Irene was just over four feet.?

The National Hurricane Center has issued its final public advisory for Sandy, the hybrid storm that has shut down stretches of the US East Coast from Virginia to Maine.
New York City is still reeling. The Associated Press reports that powerful storm surges have overwhelmed the financial district and inundated the city's subway system. More than one million people in the city's metro area are without power.
At a press conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has warned residents not to call 911 unless it is a life-threatening emergency, and has told New Yorkers to stay put. "You have to stay wherever you are. Let me repeat that. You have to stay wherever you are," he said.
The National Hurricane Center still warns of 75 mph maximum sustained winds, with gusts of even higher speeds. Over the next two days, Sandy is expected to weaken as she creeps across Pennsylvania and then turns north into western New York State.
"The worst of the weather has come," said Bloomberg.

As Hurricane Sandy bears down on the East Coast, many are asking if the so-called Frankenstorm was caused by ? or at least fueled by ? global warming.
The Huffington Post's Tom Zeller quotes Kevin Trenberth, head of the Climate Analysis Section at the USA National Center for Atmospheric Research, who describes Sandy as representing "the new normal."
"The past few years have been marked by unusually severe extreme weather characteristic of climate change." Trenberth told HuffPo. "The oceans are warmer and the atmosphere above the oceans is warmer and wetter. This new normal changes the environment for all storms and makes them more intense and with much more precipitation."
At the New Yorker, journalist Elizabeth Kolbert points to a press release by the German reinsurance giant Munich Re, titled "Severe weather in North America." It shows a nearly five-fold increase in the number of damaging weather-related events in North America over the past three decades, compared with a four-fold jump in Asia, a 2.5-fold leap in Africa, and two-fold increase in Europe and 1.5-fold in South America.
"It is, at this point, impossible to say what it will take for American politics to catch up to the reality of North American climate change," writes Kolbert.
Definitively blaming manmade climate change for Hurricane Sandy's size and intensity is impossible. After all, the world has experienced damaging hurricanes long before humans began burning fossil fuels. At most, we can say climate change simply increases the odds of such storms.
Still, one odd signal jumps out. Sandy, which has been dubbed a Frankenstorm by forecasters, is a hybrid storm created when a slow-moving, unusually wavy Arctic jet stream from the north wrapped itself around a tropical storm from the south. A study published in January 2012 found that, as Arctic ice melts, the darker water absorbs more heat, which causes the jet stream, which is propelled by north-south temperature differentials, to slow down and become wavier.
Is Superstorm Sandy a result of climate change? Nobody knows. But what we do know is that Sandy is an example of what climate change looks like.

The latest update from??the National Hurricane Center reports huge storm surges in New York Bay: 13.3 feet at Kings Point on Long Island, 13.7 feet at the Battery in New York City, and 13.3 feet at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
Reuters is reporting that Con Ed shut down power for two areas in Lower Manhattan to protect electrical equipment. The news agency reports that there are some 156,000 customers in New York City and Westchester County now without electricity.
More dire safety concerns could mean that power could be turned off for many more: The Associated Press reports that nuclear power regulators are keeping a close eye on wind speeds near reactors in five states. If sustained winds top 74 mph, the plants will go offline, per safety procedures.

From here we can expect Sandy to lose intensity, but the East Coast is by no means out of the woods yet. ?According to the NHC, tide guages have measured storm surges of almost 12 feet at Kings Point on Long Island, 8.4 feet at the Battery in New York City, and 8.6 feet at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

The National Hurricane Center is now designating Sandy as a "post-tropical cyclone," albeit one that still has hurricane-force winds:

As Sandy transitions from a hurricane to a tropical low, it will stop powering itself primarily by extracting heat from the oceans; instead it will churn as a result of horizontal?temperature differences in the atmosphere.?
Fox News reports that Sandy has made landfall?in southern New Jersey just after 6 p.m., but this has not yet been confirmed by the National Hurricane Center, which reported at 7 p.m. that the storm will hit land within the next hour or so. ?
When Sandy arrives, it is very likely that it will be at or near Atlantic City. New Jersey On-Line reports that the Garden State's governor, Chris Christie, has issued an angry rebuke to Atlantic City mayor?Lorenzo Langford, who did not require residents to evacuate.
The Monitor's Mark Clayton reports that, by 6 p.m., some 2.1 million people were already without power in nine eastern states.

With sustained winds of up to 90 miles per hour, Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall somewhere along New Jersey's southern coast sometime within the next "couple of hours," according to the most recent update from the National Hurricane Center.?
Sandy is big. The NHC update says to expect hurricane-force winds, that is, winds of more than 55 mph, up to 175 miles from her center, along all portions of the East Coast between?Chincoteague, Va. and Chatham, Mass. Tropical-storm-force winds?(35 mph to 55 mph) are forecast for 485 miles from the center.
Sandy, which is approaching the shore at 28 mph, is not expected to weaken before it makes landfall, although it will very likely become less intense once its eye is over land.?
The NHC warns of storm surges from North Carolina to New Hampshire, with particularly strong surges ? up to 11 feet ??occurring?in Long Island Sound, Raritan Bay, and New York Harbor. ?
Writing from New York City, the Monitor's Ron Scherer reports that?Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy?predicts that Sandy would bring two times more water into Long Island Sound than Hurricane Irene, which caused about $19 billion in damages.?

The eye of Hurricane Sandy is now 2-3 hours from the coast of New Jersey, according to the latest National Hurricane Center advisory. Winds are still at 90 mph, and Sandy's still moving at about 28 mph. Some have speculated that since Sandy is arriving sooner than forecast, and ahead of the high tide (between 8-9 p.m. tonight), that the storm surge won't be as bad as predicted. But that reasoning may be wrong.
Already the storm surge at New York City's Battery is at 6.1 feet, well above last year's peak during Hurricane Irene. Atlantic City is reporting a 5- foot storm surge. New Haven, Conn. is at 5 feet, and Boston has seas 4.2 feet above normal.
As previously reported, the expected storm surge in the NYC area is 6 to 11 feet. Even if Sandy makes landfall before the high tide, the winds whip around the backside of Sandy will push sea levels higher.

Hurricane Sandy's barometric pressure has dropped to 940 millibars. Wind speeds are holding at 90 mph, according to the 2 p.m. National Hurricane Center update.?
Sandy is turning toward the East Coast and has sped up to 28 mph. Even as it makes a left turn, "it also is swapping energy sources to become an extratropical cyclone.
The shift from tropical to extratropical tends to intensify the storm for a period, as well as redistribute winds and rainfall in ways that can shift the regions most heavily affected by wind and rain,"?writes Pete Spotts, the science writer for The Christian Science Monitor.
If Sandy retains the current barometric pressure, or it drops further, at landfall, the location would go into the record books as experiencing the lowest barometric pressure of any spot in the US north of Cape Hatteras, according to data compiled by the Weather Underground.

What's all the buzz about Hurricane Sandy's barometric pressure? (And does it have anything to do with inducing labor in pregnant women?)
Hurricane Sandy's barometric pressure is really low, especially for a Category 1 (winds between 74-95 mph) hurricane.
Generally, the lower the barometric pressure, the higher the winds.
Barometric pressure is a measurement of the weight of the air. "Baros" is Greek for weight, and the Greek word for measure is "metron."?A barometer measures the weight of a column of air directly above a given point in terms of inches or milibars of mercury displaced.
The normal sea level pressure is 1013.25 millibars.
Hurricane Sandy's barometric pressure was 943 milibars Monday morning, according to the Hurricane Hunters, the US Air Force pilots that regularly fly into the eye of hurricanes. That reading was a drop from the previous reading, indicating an intensification of the hurricane.
Hurricane Sandy's barometric pressure is now roughly equivalent to the typical Category 3 or Category 4 storm on Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. But Sandy is not a typical hurricane; it is, in the words of ?Weather Channel meterologist Stu Ostro,?a?"meteorologically mind-boggling combination of ingredients."
But we digress from role of barometric pressure. Suffice it to say, Sandy's barometric numbers are low, and they are helping make it a very big storm.
How low are Sandy's barometric readings??The storm isn't (yet) in the US Top 10 most intense (as measured by low barometric pressure) hurricanes. But Sandy's getting close. No. 10 on the list was a Hurricane Carla, a 1961 Category 4 storm with 931 millibars.
The lowest barometric pressure ever measured in a US hurricane was 882 millibars, in Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Wilma had sustained winds of more than 185 mph, making it a Category 5 storm.? The cyclone with the lowest recorded barometric pressure in the world was the 1979 storm Typhoon Tip, in the western Pacific Ocean, with a measurement of 869.9 millibars.
Why does a lower barometric pressure in the eye of the storm produce higher winds?
"Wind is a result of forces attempting to balance. As the pressure lowers in the center, the air spiraling around the eye must spin faster to offset the greater ?slope? (gradient) of the pressure surface," according to Steve Lanore, who uses the analogy of a ball spinning around the edge of a bowl to explain this.

Oh yes, is Hurricane Sandy likely to induce labor?
Most obstetricians who have looked at this say no. But the theory has some logic to it. Some have put forth the idea that as the atmospheric pressure drops, there's less pressure on the amniotic sac membrane, and it spontaneously ruptures ? causing the woman's water to break.
But Dr. Salih Yasin, a practicing obstetrician for 25 years in Miami, who told My Health News Daily that he has not seen any increase in women going into labor during hurricanes. And Florida gets its fair share of hurricanes and tropical storms. He mentions two studies ? one in Houston and one in Miami ? that show no correlation between falling barometric pressure and births.

At full moon, the Earth, sun and moon are arranged in a line, with Earth in the middle. Tidal ranges are especially high at this time because the gravitational tugs of the sun and moon on our planet reinforce each other. The same effect is felt at new moon, when the three bodies all line up, with the moon between Earth and the sun.
During periods of high winds, a spring tides makes storm surges more severe. AccuWeather quotes MIT atmospheric scientist Kerry Emanuel, who calls storm surges "interesting," a word that scientists often use as a synonym for "very bad."
"They are one of the major sources of damage caused by hurricanes," says Emanuel. "They are like tsunamis but they are not generated by earthquakes but by hurricane winds."

Hurricane Sandy is strengthening, and moving a little slower as it starts its turn west, according to the 11 a.m. National Hurricane Center advisory.
Sandy now has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, up from 85 mph at the 8 a.m.
It has slowed its north-northwestern movement from 20 mph, to 18 mph. And is expected to make landfall this evening "just south of the Southern New Jersey coast."

If high winds and storm surge weren't enough, several states are now experiencing snow as Sandy mixes with the low pressure ridge along the East Coast, in the Appalachian range, some higher elevations of North Carolina and Tennessee are already getting snow.

In the Great Smokey Mountains, there are reports that 6.5 inches had fallen in places and that Highway 441 near the Newfound Gap was now closed. The headline on?Knoxnews.com:

The National Weather Service report for Morristown, Tenn. in eastern Tennessee, has a Winter Storm Warning through Wednesday morning. The report includes:
_ A deep plume of moister will move over the spine of the Appalacians, result in in the potential for rain showers and snow showers in the valleys and some locally heavier snowfall across the higher elevations.
- Gusty northwesterly winds associated with this strengthening storm system will increase to 25-35 mph, and may gust up to 40-50 mph across the mountains.
The greatest potential for significant snowfall will be along the higher mountains ? with 6-12 inches possible above 3,000 feet.
But the National Hurricane Center is still predicting larger snowfalls in some areas of the Appalachians.

Atlantic City flooding as storm surge begins

With the arrival of the morning high tide, flooding has begun in the streets of Atlantic City. There are unconfirmed reports that parts of Atlantic City's boardwalk have collapsed.
In Atlantic City, winds are gusting to tropical storm strength. All 12 casinos were shut down at 4 p.m. Sunday after Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for the entire state.
By 7:30 a.m., the streets immediately around the new Revel casino and hotel were covered with more than a foot of water, witnesses said.
Parts of Black Horse Pike in West Atlantic City, Route 30 and Route 9 in Absecon, Route 559 in Somers Point and Route 322 in Hamilton are already flooded, county officials said. Roads in Hamilton Township and Mays Landing were also impassable, reports NJ.com.
In Cape May the ocean has also breached the main oceanfront drive, Ocean Avenue, near the city's southern end, the Associated Press reports
New Jersey is also seeing power outages. As of 3:30 a.m., PSE&G is reporting 829 customers without power due to the early effects of Hurricane Sandy. Of that total, 794 of the outages are located in Deptford Township in Gloucester County. As of 5 a.m., JCP&L reported about 5,000 customers without power in Burlington and Ocean county, including more than 4,000 in Toms River, reports NJ.com.

The National Hurricane Center 8 a.m. report indicates that Hurricane Sandy is now starting to pick up speed (moving at 20 mph) and turn west. The blocking high pressure area in the north Atlantic will send Sandy on a sharper turn toward the coast later Monday morning.
Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft have clocked Sandy's sustained winds at 85 mph, with higher gusts, as far as way as 175 miles from the eye of the hurricane. As we've said this is a BIG storm. Tropical storm force winds (above 39 mph) extend almost 500 miles from the center of the storm. That means tropical force winds are now pummeling the coasts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Easter Virginia.

Storm Surge Outlook

As predicted, Hurricane Sandy has strengthened in the last 24 hours. It has begun it's turn toward the? East Coast. The barometric pressure has dropped to record levels, the winds have picked up to about 85 miles per hour, and Sandy has grown in size. Sandy now spans 1,000 miles. While it's still at least 300 miles from landfall, tropical storm strength winds (sustained winds above 39 mph) are already being felt on shore.
Record storm surges are expected, which is why hundreds of thousands of residents from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas. Some 375,000 people were ordered to leave lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City.
NOAA and the National Hurricane Center are predicting storm surges of 6-11 feet in the New York City area. How bad is that? For context, during Hurricane Irene last year, the storm surge at Battery Park hit 4.4 feet. The maximum surge during Irene was 4.5 feet in the New York City area, at Kings Point.
Currently, the storm surge is already at 4 feet at Kings Point, according to the Weather Channel.

'Jersey Shore' cast reacts to Sandy's devastation

For the past six seasons, Seaside Heights, N.J., has served as part-time home and playground to the always outrageous cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore." It's been the backdrop of arrests, parties, hookups and countless spray tans for Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and the gang. And now, Superstorm Sandy has left the boardwalk reduced to rubble and there's destruction all around.
E! News reports, via a reporter for the Newark Star-Ledger, that somehow the house featured on the show?survived the storm undamaged.
Most of the cast has been online and confirmed that they're safe and sound. But if their Twitter feeds are anything to go by, they're all still reeling from the state of their old stomping grounds.
"Just saw seaside update on TV!" wrote Ronni Magro. "This is crazy living there for 4 summers & seeing in such disaster! What do u mean no more boardwAlk?"

Snooki was similarly shocked, writing, "Seaside Heights suffered bad from the hurricane and my prayers go out to everyone affected! We are all fine here...love you JS."

The message was a little more lighthearted from Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio.
"Can't Believe #Sandy Ruined @snooki's PooOorchh !!!! Where Am I Gonna Kick It At Now ??" he tweeted.
But Vinny Guadagnino shifted the focus to one of the real stars of the Jersey shore.
"Just saw our Police Chief Boyd of Seaside on the news risking his life to save people. #HERO," Guadagnino wrote.
As for Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Deena Cortese, according to their last tweets, they both lost power early on in the storm and haven't logged on again yet.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Three touchdown passes, one incomplete pass.
Not a bad night for Alex Smith, and it could have been better, considering that the one incomplete pass was dropped by a wide-open receiver.
The San Francisco quarterback completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns ? two to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss ? to help San Francisco flatten the Arizona Cardinals 24-3 on Monday night.
"Eighteen of 19, I have never seen that," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "How important for your quarterback to play very well? It is very important and I don't know how you play much better. It was a fantastic game by him."
Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett could hardly believe what Smith had done.
"Everyone's surprised. My 5-year-old son's surprised," Dockett said, "but at the end of the day it wasn't like he had to make the long perfect throws. He had some guys open and we missed some tackles and they made plays."
Smith said he had no idea his stats were that good.
"Which is a good thing," he said. "I don't want to think about my stats or incompletions or anything like that. I was kind of in a good rhythm, the whole offense was. "
Smith has withstood more than his share of criticism he was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft in 2005. He was not interested in calling this a statement performance.
"At this point I don't care," he said. "if you ask me a few years ago, yeah maybe, but at this point I don't really care. I am concerned about winning. The guys in the locker room know what I am about and that is what really matters."
As for reports he had lost his confidence, Smith said, "It was in my closet. I found it."
Smith was 14 of 15 for 146 yards and two touchdowns, both to Crabtree, as the 49ers built a 17-0 halftime lead.
Moss caught a 47-yard TD pass, dodging tacklers down the sideline on a play that seemed to turn back the clock to the receiver's prime. With the catch, he tied Terrell Owens for fourth on the NFL career touchdown list with 156.
Smith, who tied a career high with the three touchdown passes, spread out his completions to 10 receivers. Crabtree led the way with five catches for 72 yards.
Arizona's defense, supposed to be the team's strength, missed tackle after tackle in an embarrassing nationally televised performance at home. The 24 points were the most allowed by the Cardinals this season.
"This was a big test for us, and everyone saw how it went," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "It was disappointing to say the least."
Quarterback John Skelton called the loss "embarrassing" and "humiliating."
Led by Smith's near-perfect precision passing, the 49ers methodically dominated from the start. He had the best completion percentage of his career, and he would have been perfect had Delanie Walker not dropped the ball when he was wide open on a crossing route in the first half.
A 10-play, 77-yard drive that consumed just over 6 minutes of the first quarter put San Francisco up 7-0. On third-and-goal from the 3, Smith threw a sidelines pass to Crabtree, who outfought Patrick Peterson for the ball and the touchdown.
A flurry missed tackles, most notably an open-field whiff by Sam Acho, helped Ted Ginn Jr. return a punt 35 yards to the Arizona 45 in the second quarter. Daryl Washington sacked Smith to help set up a third-and-23 from the Arizona 46. But Smith found Crabtree over the middle for 22 yards, just a yard shy of the first down. David Akers' 43 yard field goal made it 10-0 with 5:58 left in the half.
Crabtree beat Peterson again for San Francisco's second touchdown. Smith threw over the middle to the receiver, who caught the ball, then fooled Peterson with an inside move into the end zone to make it 17-0 with 1:41 left in the half. The 49ers drove 68 yards in eight plays, again overcoming a sack, this one by Calais Campbell, that made it second-and-goal from the 16. Smith threw 7 yards to Mario Manningham to set up the TD toss to Crabtree.
The Cardinals were booed off the field by the home crowd at the half.
Things didn't get any better for the home team in the third quarter. On third-and-9, Smith threw 30 yards to Crabtree, who evaded a host of tacklers. Then on third-and-8, Smith tossed a short pass to Moss, who sidestepped a series of would-be defenders all the way to the end zone, putting San Francisco ahead 24-0 with 7:27 left in the third quarter.
The Cardinals averted a shutout with Jay Feely's 28-yard field goal
John Skelton, making his second start since Kevin Kolb went down with rib injuries, completed 32 of 52 passes for 290 yards, often overthrowing receivers. The Cardinals rushed for just 7 yards in nine attempts against the 49ers, who entered the game as the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL, No. 2 against the run.
Arizona's final possession ended when Larry Fitzgerald was stopped at the 1.

Apple announces departure of SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall and SVP of retail, John Browett
Apple announced today that Scott Forstall, senior vice-president of iOS, and John Browett, recent SVP of retail, are leaving the company. Forstall, who came to Apple from NeXT when Steve Jobs returned to the company, will stay on until next year as an advisor to Tim Cook. John Browett, who seemingly had trouble fitting in with Apple's culture, sounds like he's leaving sooner. Jony Ive, Eddy Cue, Craig Federighi, and Bob Manfield will be divvying up a lot of their duties. Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, said in the press release:
We are in one of the most prolific periods of innovation and new products in Apple?s history. The amazing products that we?ve introduced in September and October, iPhone 5, iOS 6, iPad mini, iPad, iMac, MacBook Pro, iPod touch, iPod nano and many of our applications, could only have been created at Apple and are the direct result of our relentless focus on tightly integrating world-class hardware, software and services.
Jony Ive, longtime SVP of Industrial Design, will take over Human Interface across Apple.
His incredible design aesthetic has been the driving force behind the look and feel of Apple?s products for more than a decade.
Eddy Cue, promoted to SVP of Internet and Services following the ill-fated MobileMe launch, which take on Siri and Maps.
This organization has overseen major successes such as the iTunes Store, the App Store, the iBookstore and iCloud. This group has an excellent track record of building and strengthening Apple?s online services to meet and exceed the high expectations of our customers.
Craig Federighi, who took over OS X following the departure of Bertrand Serlet, will also take on iOS.
Apple has the most advanced mobile and desktop operating systems, and this move brings together the OS teams to make it even easier to deliver the best technology and user experience innovations to both platforms.
Bob Mansfield, who left his post as SVP of Hardware Engineering, only to return as SVP of [nothing specified] will now lead a new group called Technologies.
[Technologies combines] all of Apple?s wireless teams across the company in one organization, fostering innovation in this area at an even higher level. This organization will also include the semiconductor teams, who have ambitious plans for the future.
Apple will conduct a search to replace Browett as the head of retail.

Warning Signs of Elder Abuse - Daytona In Home Care | Senior Care
Research indicates that more than one in 10 seniors may experience some type of elder abuse, according to the?National Center on Elder Abuse, and many of those cases go unreported.
As a health care professional that works closely with seniors, you are in a position to prevent or recognize and report situations in which a senior has fallen victim to abuse.
Recognizing and Reporting Elder Abuse
The following, from the National Center on Elder Abuse, details the five main forms of elder abuse and the warning signs that may indicate a senior is in danger.
Physical Abuse?? Use of force to threaten or physically injure a vulnerable elder. If you notice warning signs such as slap marks, unexplained bruises, or certain types of burns and blisters, question the senior as to how he or she got them.
Sexual Abuse?? Sexual contact that is forced, tricked, threatened, or otherwise coerced upon a vulnerable elder, including anyone who is unable to grant consent. Warning signs could include bruises around the breasts or genital area and unexplained sexually transmitted diseases.
Emotional Abuse?? Verbal attacks, threats, rejection, isolation, or belittling acts that cause or could cause mental anguish, pain, or distress to a senior. Withdrawal from normal activities, unexplained changes in alertness, or other unusual behavioral changes may indicate emotional abuse.
Exploitation?? Theft, fraud, misuse or neglect of authority, and use of undue influence as a lever to gain control over an older person?s money or property. Sudden changes in finances and accounts, altered wills and trusts, unusual bank withdrawals, checks written as ?loans? or ?gifts,? and loss of property could all indicate exploitation.
Neglect?? A caregiver?s failure or refusal to provide for a vulnerable elder?s safety, physical, or emotional needs. Warning signs include pressure ulcers (bed sores), filth, lack of medical care, malnutrition or dehydration.
What to Do If You Suspect Elder Abuse
If you see any warning signs that lead you to suspect mistreatment, report it to the local adult protective services agency or law enforcement. A professional will investigate the situation and may ask you questions, but know that you are not required to prove that abuse has taken place. If the problem persists after the investigation, continue to report anything you witness that violates a senior?s rights.
You can also play an important role in the?prevention of elder abuse. Keeping close tabs on the older adults you care for, especially those that are isolated, and encouraging communication about any problems they might be having could go a long way to ensure their safety.

Sandy snarls flights: What you should know if you're traveling

If you had to define a travel nightmare, this would be it: Thousands of flights canceled, train service halted, public transit on pause and countless travelers going nowhere fast as Hurricane Sandy menaces the East Coast.
?There are travel messes and then there are travel messes,? said Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com.
?You have things like the Icelandic volcano, for example, which was only (affecting) trans-Atlantic traffic. This is bigger because it?s both trans-Atlantic and Eastern seaboard. The Eastern seaboard controls sort of the nation,?so it trickles down throughout the nation. Even if you?re flying on the West Coast you could be delayed because of what?s going on.?
Deteriorating weather conditions forced airlines to cancel nearly 14,000 flights through Tuesday, and that number is expected to grow, according to Jackie Butcher, a spokesperson for FlightAware.com.?Philadelphia International was most affected on Monday with 1,259 cancellations, followed by the three major New York City-area airports.
John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia remained open on Monday, but the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey discouraged travelers from even trying to get to the airports.The agency also began setting up cots for stranded passengers and placed sandbags at Newark Liberty. Photos showed flood waters from Hurricane Sandy approaching LaGuardia runways and taxiways on Monday afternoon.
The ripple effects are being felt across the country and even the world, as travelers trying to fly into the region to either get back home or make a connection are in limbo.?Even Capt. Chesley B. ?Sully? Sullenberger, the pilot made famous by the "Miracle on the Hudson" flight, tweeted that he was "stuck in PA" because of Sandy on Monday afternoon.
Hailey Walmsley was scheduled to return to Boston after attending a wedding in Atlanta, but she is stuck at the city?s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ? often dubbed ?Hotel Hartsfield? when travelers in transit have nowhere to go???and told she won?t be able to fly out until Thursday.
?My flight was actually canceled twice,? she told Atlanta's?NBC?affiliate WXIA. ?So now it?s just kind of up in the air.?
In Denver, where about 50 flights to the East Coast were canceled, Steve Houston was trying to get home to Belfast, Ireland.
"My biggest concern was that I would leave Denver, get to New York, and then get stranded in New York and be sitting there in the middle of the hurricane," Houston told Denver's?NBC?affiliate KUSA.
JetBlue closed its New York City operations Sunday night and proactively canceled more than 1,000 flights through Wednesday morning, said airline?spokeswoman Sharon Jones.
?High winds are no bueno for flying machines, so we are sheltering our aircraft in other cities,? the airline said on its blog.
American Airlines suspended operations Sunday night until Wednesday at nine airports in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, including Ronald Reagan Washington National, Dulles International, Baltimore/Washington International, Norfolk International, Philadelphia International, Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Bradley International.
?First flights into?these cities will resume Wednesday. First flights out of these cities will take place after noon on Wednesday,? said spokesman Kent Powell.
Delta Air Lines, which has cancelled about 2,500 flights, expects to resume limited operations at its LaGuardia and JFK hubs on Tuesday afternoon, with a full restart targeted for Wednesday. Operations at other East Coast airports are expected to resume by mid-morning Tuesday. ?
Still, the good news is that the storm is hitting during a relatively slow travel period, FareCompare.com's?Seaney said. Airlines also had plenty of notice to move planes to safer grounds and pre-cancel flights, he added.
?They?ll be able to unwind (the backlog) in a day or two completely as long as there?s no major damage to airports,? Seaney said.

All airlines now have hurricane-related travel waiver policies in effect, allowing passengers to change their reservations without a fee.
If you bought tickets through sites such as Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz,?call those companies and have them rebook, instead of calling airlines directly, because the carriers? phone lines may be jammed as everyone scrambles to change plans, advised?Airfarewatchdog.com founder?George Hobica.
Also keep in mind that if you are stuck at the airport, hurricanes are considered a "force majeure" event or an "act of God" by the airlines, which means that cancellations are viewed as out of the airlines' control and the only thing travelers are entitled to is a refund, Hobica said. In other words, you may not get a hotel voucher.
Here are some more tips if you have to fly into or out of the region this week:
- Sign up for alerts from your airlines and follow them on Twitter to get the latest information on your flights;
- Monitor the FAA?s flight information map for any airport delays or closures;
- Have items like medications, your hotel and airline phone numbers, a change of clothes and toiletries with you, Hobica advised. If they're kept in checked luggage and you're stranded, you're most likely out of luck;

Air travel isn't the only mode of transportation impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Amtrak cancelled nearly all service on the eastern seaboard on Monday, and public transit was suspended in New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
It?s not a good time to be a tourist either. In New York, the Statue of Liberty crown reopened to the public on Sunday, but the monument will be closed Monday and Tuesday because of the storm. All Broadway and off-Broadway shows have been canceled for Monday.?
