Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller (for PlayStation 3)

While it probably goes without saying, hardcore gamers spend hours at a time on their games. They obsess over strategies for each title. And they spend hundreds of dollars on their gaming gear. The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller is aimed at these gamers, and its $129.99 (list) price tag is justified thanks to its extensive customization options. This PlayStation 3 game controller lets you switch between multiple types of analog sticks, direction pads, controller configurations, and even faceplates, with even more planned. Mad Catz also makes a same-price Xbox 360 version, which is nearly identical because you can choose between PS3 and Xbox 360-style analog sticks and direction pads for either model. Its excellent feel and multiple options help this pricey gamepad earn our Editors' Choice.

Customizing the Gamepad
Straight out of the box, the MLG Pro Circuit looks like your typical third-party PlayStation 3 gamepad with a detachable cable. However, once you pull the magnetically attached face plate off, its differences and appeal become apparent. The direction pad and analog sticks are modular, and you can swap out the default broken arrow direction pad and convex PlayStation 3-style sticks with the included solid plus direction pad and concave Xbox 360-style sticks. The left analog stick and direction pad can also be swapped back and forth, like Mad Catz's Cyborg V.5 gamepad, letting you choose whether you want to play with a PlayStation 3-style layout or an Xbox 360-style layout.

The customization doesn't end there. A cartridge on the back of the gamepad holds two 35-gram weights, giving you three weight adjustments for the controller. A flat cover replaces the cartridge if you don't want any weights and want the back of the gamepad to be flat, instead of feeling like it has a battery pack. The faceplate and left and right handles of the controller are removable, letting you choose between the included glossy black and matte black plates included with the gamepad (or you can mix and match them). All of these different parts, plus the removable three-meter (9-foot-10-inch-) woven cable and the gamepad itself, fit in the included carrying case for easy transportation to tournaments or friends' homes so you can switch your configuration on the fly. If that's not enough, Mad Catz will offer additional "ProModule" analog sticks and direction pads of varying shapes and textures, faceplates of varying styles, and detachable cables of varying lengths.

Despite the many removable parts, when everything is locked in the MLG Pro Circuit Controller feels rock-solid. The screw-on cable connection keeps the cable secured tight (there's no wireless option), and the direction pad and analog sticks, despite fastening with a short twist into the sockets, stay in place. With the faceplate on, you can't even tell the gamepad is modular.

How Gaming Feels
The gamepad's shape is closer to an Xbox 360 controller than a PlayStation 3 controller, and feels pleasantly solid in the hand even without the weights. The Xbox 360-like trigger buttons and larger, more curvy profile are much more comfortable than the PlayStation 3's stock Sixaxis and DualShock 3 gamepads. In my large hands, the MLG Pro Circuit Controller simply feels better. Instead of being pawned off to the second player, this gamepad cries out to stay with the host.

One minor touch makes the MLG Pro Circuit Controller so much more appealing for gamers on the PS3. If you hold the Start and Select buttons for five seconds, the player lights on the bottom will invert (if you're player one, the first light will be dark and the other three will light up) to signal that the trigger and bumper shoulder buttons have been switched. This means you can pull the right trigger button to fire weapons in most first-person shooters, when previously the right bumper was used to fire. It's a small feature, but it makes playing shooters much more comfortable. The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller for Xbox 360 doesn't include this feature.

I tried the MLG Pro Circuit Controller with three games: Mortal Kombat, Resistance: Fall of Man, and EDF: Insect Armageddon. As a fighter, Mortal Kombat benefitted from being able to switch both the position and style of the direction pad. I had the most luck with the PS3-style broken arrow direction pad in the PS3 configuration. In Resistance: Fall of Man, I used the shoulder button switching feature to use the trigger to fire, and I had the most comfortable experience with Xbox 360-style sticks in the PS3-style configuration. In EDF: Insect Armageddon, I had the best experience turning quickly to kill giant bugs with the PS3-style sticks in the Xbox 360-style configuration. Your tastes may vary depending on your play style and the size of your hands, but the different options mean you'll play comfortably in exactly the way you want.?

The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller might be an expensive gamepad, but it's also the best third-party gamepad you can buy thanks to its solid design and multiple configuration options. The simple ability to switch analog stick styles and positions makes it appealing, and the shoulder button switching feature makes it invaluable for gamers who like to play shooters on the PS3. If you can spend the $130 and you spend all your time on your PS3, this is the gamepad you want to get.

Android camera showdown: Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Samsung Galaxy S II

Cameras

The cameras in our Android phones have certainly gotten better than most would have expected.  The old standard of "it's a cell phone camera, it'll never be as good as a cheap point-and-shoot" is no longer valid.  The hardware is getting better, and the software is improving right alongside it, making the experience of using your phone as a camera enjoyable, and in the right hands, almost professional.

The big news in Android last year on the camera front was the Samsung Galaxy S II's 8-megapixel rear shooter, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus' "zero shutter lag" camera.  We decided that these two had to go head to head.  Hit the break to check it out.

(AP Photo/ University of Florida, Jemeema Carrigan)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? A burgeoning population of huge pythons ? many of them pets that were turned loose by their owners when they got too big ? appears to be wiping out large numbers of raccoons, opossums, bobcats and other mammals in the Everglades, a study says.

The study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that sightings of medium-size mammals are down dramatically ? as much as 99 percent, in some cases ? in areas where pythons and other large, non-native constrictor snakes are known to be lurking.

Scientists fear the pythons could disrupt the food chain and upset the Everglades' environmental balance in ways difficult to predict.

"The effects of declining mammal populations on the overall Everglades ecosystem, which extends well beyond the national park boundaries, are likely profound," said John Willson, a research scientist at Virginia Tech University and co-author of the study.

Tens of thousands of Burmese pythons, which are native to Southeast Asia, are believed to be living in the Everglades, where they thrive in the warm, humid climate. While many were apparently released by their owners, others may have escaped from pet shops during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and have been reproducing ever since.

Burmese pythons can grow to be 26 feet long and more than 200 pounds, and they have been known to swallow animals as large as alligators. They and other constrictor snakes kill their prey by coiling around it and suffocating it.

The National Park Service has counted 1,825 Burmese pythons that have been caught in and around Everglades National Park since 2000. Among the largest so far was a 156-pound, 16.4-foot one captured earlier this month.

For the study, researchers drove 39,000 miles along Everglades-area roads from 2003 through 2011, counting wildlife spotted along the way and comparing the results with surveys conducted on the same routes in 1996 and 1997.

The researchers found staggering declines in animal sightings: a drop of 99.3 percent among raccoons, 98.9 percent for opossums, 94.1 percent for white-tailed deer and 87.5 percent for bobcats. Along roads where python populations are believed to be smaller, declines were lower but still notable.

Rabbits and foxes, which were commonly spotted in 1996 and 1997, were not seen at all in the later counts. Researchers noted slight increases in coyotes, Florida panthers, rodents and other mammals, but discounted that finding because so few were spotted overall.

"The magnitude of these declines underscores the apparent incredible density of pythons in Everglades National Park," said Michael Dorcas, a professor at Davidson College in North Carolina and lead author of the study.

Although scientists cannot definitively say the pythons are killing off the mammals, the snakes are the prime suspect. The increase in pythons coincides with the mammals' decrease, and the decline appears to grow in magnitude with the size of the snakes' population in an area. A single disease appears unlikely to be the cause since several species were affected.

The report says the effect on the overall ecosystem is hard to predict. Declines among bobcats and foxes, which eat rabbits, could be linked to pythons' feasting on rabbits. On the flip side, declines among raccoons, which eat eggs, may help some turtles, crocodiles and birds.

Scientists point with concern to what happened in Guam, where the invasive brown tree snake has killed off birds, bats and lizards that pollinated trees and flowers and dispersed seeds. That has led to declines in native trees, fish-eating birds and certain plants.

In 2010, Florida banned private ownership of Burmese pythons. Earlier this month, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced a federal ban on the import of Burmese pythons and three other snakes.

Salazar said Monday that the study shows why such restrictions were needed.

"This study paints a stark picture of the real damage that Burmese pythons are causing to native wildlife and the Florida economy," he said.

Jay-Z, Beyonce make Billboard industry power list (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce joined a list of top music executives, led by Live Nation Entertainment chairman Irving Azoff, on Billboard magazine's first Power 100 chart on Friday.

Only a handful of artists broke onto the list that sought to name the recording industry's most influential people and was dominated by businessmen and women. The selection was determined by a combination of money, market share, Billboard chart data and other information, and a team of 15 magazine editors analyzed the results to produce the list.

Both Jay-Z and Beyonce made it due to numerous ventures outside their singing careers including Jay-Z's Roc Nation music, management and entertainment company and Beyonce's sponsorship deals with brands such as L'Oreal. Collectively, they were placed at No. 13 on the Power 100 list.

Azoff has been at the helm of Live Nation Entertainment, a ticket sales and concert company, since 2008 and previously represented artists such as Christina Aguilera and Van Halen.

Just behind Azoff at No. 2 was Coran Capshaw, the founder and partner of Red Light Management, who helps run the careers of groups such as the Dave Matthews Band. Rounding out the top three was Universal Music Group's chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge.

Others on the list included Creative Artists Agency's managing partner and head of music Rob Light at No. 7 and Interscope Geffen A&M Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine at No. 10.

Rock band U2 came in at No. 27 along with their manager Paul McGuinness based on their ability to sell more than 7 million tickets to their last tour along with their prolific chart career. Fellow rocker Jon Bon Jovi clocked in at No. 50.

Country music star Taylor Swift, 22, made the list at No. 78 for being a "branding powerhouse" with her own management company and lucrative contracts with companies such as CoverGirl. Pop sensation Lady Gaga followed Swift at No. 84, picked for the sway she holds over millions of loyal followers on Facebook and Twitter.

The list held some surprises as "The X Factor" creator and television mogul Simon Cowell ranked last at No. 100, beaten by his former "American Idol" colleague, host Ryan Seacrest, who ranked No. 64.

Seacrest was placed higher due to his numerous ventures including his syndicated daily radio show, "American Idol" hosting gig, production company at NBC Universal and his newest venture to reshape HDNet as a pop culture TV network in collaboration with billionaire Mark Cuban, Creative Artists Agency and live entertainment company, AEG.

The full list can be viewed at Billboard.biz and in the upcoming issue of Billboard Magazine, on newsstands January 30.

Debate over Calif.'s new 'clean car' regs (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Auto dealers say California's proposed rules to require carmakers to build more electric and other less-polluting hybrid cars and trucks by 2025 will cost consumers more money and will stifle the industry's growth.

Consumer groups say customers might pay more for the vehicles but will save in lower fuel and other costs.

Both sides submitted testimony Thursday during a meeting of the state's air quality board, which was poised to vote on rules to require that vehicles emit about 75 percent less smog-producing pollutants.

The new standards, which also include big cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, would begin with new cars sold in 2015, and get increasingly more stringent until 2025. The rules also mandate that one of every seven new cars sold in 2025 in the state be a zero-emission or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols said she hopes the rules lead "the nation and the world."

"We can't afford to wait. We have to act on these issues now," she said at the panel's meeting. "Our projections show continued growth in population and vehicle miles traveled, which will affect air quality for years to come."

Other states often adopt California's smog emissions standards because they are stricter than federal ones.

Fourteen states, including Washington, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, have adopted the state's current emissions goals, which is why the new regulations could have a wide-ranging effect. Of those states, 10 also adopted the zero-emission vehicle standards.

But the California New Car Dealers Association and other industry groups representing those who sell cars said the board is overestimating consumer demand for electric vehicles and other so-called "zero-emission vehicles."

Some dealer groups have estimated that $3,200 would be added to the average cost of a car because of the required technological changes, and that consumers have been slow to adopt them.

Jonathan Morrison, of the state dealers' association, said car retailers are supportive of new technologies that are accepted by their customers, but said the acceptance of electric and other vehicles has been slow.

"Consumers do not make purchasing decisions based upon regulatory mandates," he said.

The board's research staff disputes those estimates and says increases in hybrid and other sales continue to rise as more cars hit the market. They argue that fuel cost savings will make up for any vehicle price increase.

"Our research shows a $1,400 to $1,900 car price increase. But over the life of the vehicles, the owners save $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance costs," board spokesman David Clegern said.

One of the nation's foremost consumer groups, the Consumers' Union, the policy and advocacy division of Consumer Reports, supports the regulations.

The rules will "protect consumers by encouraging the development of cleaner, more efficient cars that save families money, help reduce the American economy's vulnerability to oil price shocks and reduce harmful air pollution," according to a letter from the group.

Automakers including Ford Motor Corp., Chrysler Group LLC, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and others said they generally supported the regulations in short statements delivered during the hearing.

The overall goal of the state is to have 1.4 million zero-emission and plug-in hybrids on California roads by 2025. But the program also looks ahead to 2050, laying groundwork for a goal of having 87 percent of the state's fleet of new vehicles fueled by electricity, hydrogen fuel cells or other clean technologies.

Yet the rules do provide some flexibility for automakers by giving them the ability to claim credits toward the state's zero-emission mandates if the company's other models exceed the federal greenhouse gas emissions mandates. The credits could be applied toward those zero-emission vehicle mandates starting in 2018 through 2021.

However, this aspect of the plan was not supported by many of the U.S. car makers, who said it could take hundreds of thousands of electric and other clean vehicles off the road in that time period, hurting the emerging market.

"This greenhouse gas over-compliance provision runs counter to the goals of the zero-emission vehicle mandates," said Robert Babick, speaking on behalf of GM. "We don't see how this provision makes the program better."

The board is scheduled to resume hearing testimony on Friday morning in Los Angeles.

Ivory Coast chief to sign defense pact with Paris (AP)

PARIS ? The presidents of France and Ivory Coast met Thursday after the African leader arrived here for a three-day visit that is due to include the signing of a defense pact in the wake of post-election violence in his country.

Alassane Ouattara also may get some pressure from France to punish militias who engaged in violence while backing him during the standoff that followed the 2010 vote, an episode that left more than 3,000 people dead and kept him out of the presidency for seven months

More than 2,000 French soldiers were in Ivory Coast at the height of the crisis, backing U.N. forces. Under a new accord, up to 300 are expected to remain at a base outside Abidjan, the west African country's economic capital. The new accord replaces a 1961 agreement.

Ouattara took the oath of office in May 2011 with French President Nicolas Sarkozy present. Now, Ouattara's predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo, awaits trial before the International Criminal Court in The Hague for the alleged crimes against humanity committed by his army in the standoff.

France, former colonial ruler in Ivory Coast, is maintaining aid to the country after so far injecting euro400 million ($525.8 million). About euro1 billion in debt is expected to be canceled.

As part of a program for so-called Very Indebted Countries, a debt relief and development contract worth euro2 billion is expected to be concluded this year. It is aimed at fighting poverty, promoting educational and professional training and strengthening the rule of law.

Despite his international backing, Ouattara's failure so far to punish militias backing him who killed Gbagbo's supporters has cast a shadow over his rule.

France is encouraging the new president to take action so that peace and security are anchored in the country, an official close to Sarkozy said. The person requested anonymity because of a lack of authorization to speak publicly.

"Those who killed, whatever side they were on, will be judged," Ouattara said in an interview with the daily Le Monde's Thursday edition, a response he has offered in the past.

Scientists produce stronger T-rays, bring Tricorders closer to reality

A group of scientists from Imperial College London and Singapore's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) have developed a new technique that could have far reaching impacts for Star Trek fans everywhere. It all involves something known as Terahertz (THz), or T-rays: electromagnetic rays that have already been used in full-body airport scanners and have the potential to be used across a much broader range of medical and environmental applications. Because every molecule can be uniquely identified within the THz range, these T-rays can be used to pick up on cancerous cells and other biological matter, perhaps even within a Tricorder-like scanner. Now, Imperial College's Stefan Maier and his team of scientists say they've found a way to create a stronger beam of T-rays, using so-called "nano-antennas" to generate an amplified THz field. In fact, this field can produce about 100 times more power than most other THz sources, which could allow for sharper imaging devices. "T-rays promise to revolutionize medical scanning to make it faster and more convenient, potentially relieving patients from the inconvenience of complicated diagnostic procedures and the stress of waiting for accurate results," Maier explained. "Thanks to modern nanotechnology and nanofabrication, we have made a real breakthrough in the generation of T-rays that takes us a step closer to these new scanning devices." For more details, check out the links below.

Study: Stem cells may aid vision in blind people

(AP) ? Two legally blind women appeared to gain some vision after receiving an experimental treatment using embryonic stem cells, scientists reported Monday.

While embryonic stem cells were first isolated more than a decade ago, most of the research has been done in lab animals. The new results come from the first tests in humans for a vision problem. Researchers caution the work is still very preliminary.

"This study provides reason for encouragement, but plans to now get such a treatment would be premature," said stem cell expert Paul Knoepfler of the University of California, Davis, who had no role in the research.

Last summer, each patient was injected in one eye with cells derived from embryonic stem cells at the University of California, Los Angeles. One patient had the "dry" form of age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness. The other had a rare disorder known as Stargardt disease that causes serious vision loss. There's no cure for either eye problem.

After four months, both showed some improvement in reading progressively smaller letters on an eye chart. The Stargardt patient, a graphic artist in Los Angeles, went from seeing no letters at all to being able to read five of the largest letters.

However, experts said the improvement of the macular degeneration patient might be mostly psychological, because the vision in her untreated eye appeared to get better too.

Both patients remain legally blind despite their improvements, said experts not connected with the study.

"One must be very careful not to overinterpret the visual benefit," said Vanderbilt University retina specialist Dr. Paul Sternberg, who is also the president-elect of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The findings were published online Monday by the journal Lancet. This early test was meant to study whether the stem cell therapy was safe in people and not whether it would improve vision.

Scientists at UCLA and Advanced Cell Technology, which funded the work, said they were pleased that there have been no signs of rejection or abnormal growth months after the procedure.

Embryonic stem cells can transform into any cell of the body. Scientists are hoping to harness embryonic stem cells to create a variety of replacement tissues for transplant, but their use has been controversial because human embryos have to be destroyed to harvest the cells.

The latest news comes two months after Geron Corp. halted its stem cell-based experiment for spinal cord injuries, saying it planned to focus instead on two experimental cancer drugs.

Meanwhile, ACT is pushing ahead with its blindness study. The company said Monday that surgeons in London injected a patient with Stargardt disease last week.

Second life: Revive your old workstation with SSDs (InfoWorld)

San Francisco ? I've written on a number of occasions about the capabilities of enterprise-class SLC solid-state drives (SSDs) when leveraged in demanding primary storage environments. Their ability to both provide impressive sequential read/write performance and shoulder enormous OLTP loads has made them an almost indispensable component of high-end database and large VDI infrastructures.

However, to stop there ignores the enormous impact of consumer and workstation-grade MLC-based SSDs on the desktop market. The price of these devices has been falling consistently as their popularity has grown over the past few years (notwithstanding occasional spikes due to supply problems) and is poised to drop even further. Their low power requirements and ability to withstand vibration have made them a great choice for laptops, while their performance versus 5,400-rpm ATA disks has turned coveted sub-20-second POST-to-login boot times into a reality.

These lower-end SSDs have also found another interesting niche: in resurrecting older desktop/workstation hardware.

Megaupload site wants assets back, to fight charges (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Internet website Megaupload.com, shut down by authorities over allegations that it illegally peddled copyrighted material, is trying to recover its servers and get back online, a lawyer for the company said on Friday.

The company and seven of its executives were charged in a 5-count, 72-page indictment unsealed on Thursday accusing them of engaging in a wide-ranging and lucrative scheme to offer material online without compensating the copyright holders.

Authorities in New Zealand arrested four of those charged, including one of its founders, who legally changed his name to Kim Dotcom. Assets were also seized money, servers, domain names and other assets in the United States and several countries.

"The company is looking at its legal options for getting back its servers and its domain and getting its servers back up online," Megaupload's lawyer Ira Rothken told Reuters. "Megaupload will vigorously defend itself."

He said the company simply offered online storage. "It is really offensive to say that just because people can upload bad things, therefore Megaupload is automatically responsible," he said.

No decision has been made yet about whether they will fight extradition from New Zealand to the United States, Rothken said.

U.S. authorities have painted a much darker picture of the company's operations, saying that Megaupload readily made available copyrighted material including music, television shows, movies, pornography and even terrorism propaganda videos.

Users could upload material to the company's sites, which then would create a link that could be distributed so others could download it, according to the indictment. Some paid subscription fees for faster upload and download speeds.

Despite complaints from copyright holders, the Megaupload did not remove all of the material when requested to do so, prosecutors said. The company's executives earned more than $175 million from subscription fees and advertising, they said.

POSSIBLE NEW MEGAUPLOAD SITE

Less than a day after U.S. authorities shut down the Megaupload.com site and several of its sister sites, there appeared to be an attempt to resurrect the site.

Twitter was flooded with messages circulating a new Internet Protocol address, but the site offered no substantive content immediately and it did not appear that it was sanctioned by Megaupload.

The new website, which is being hosted in the Netherlands, looked similar to the original Megaupload.com website. The company's lawyer said that he was not directly familiar with the new site.

"We're not familiar with any official effort at this point to get the site back up in light of the fact that its major servers are in the possession of the United States government and other governments," Rothken said.

One of those arrested on Thursday was Bram van der Kolk, who has citizenship in the Netherlands and New Zealand. He oversaw programming and the network structure for Megaupload's websites, according to court papers.

U.S. officials were asked on Thursday about the risk of the site reappearing elsewhere in the future, a key issue that has confronted authorities in the past when they've tried to shut down Internet sites selling counterfeit goods.

"Right now we're in the process of executing search and seizure warrants and certainly it's not going to pop up again today. But I couldn't speculate as to what may or may not happen in the future," one Justice Department official said on Thursday.

Another official said "maintaining and running and assembling a site like this is very expensive. And obviously the seizure of financial assets is critical in this type of investigation and prosecution in preventing it from going forward."

The case, which started as an investigation in March 2010, emerged just as lawmakers in Congress have been battling over new legislation sought by the television, movie and music industries that was aimed at making it harder for such material to be so easily peddled over the Internet.

Some major technology companies, including Google and Facebook, have sought to derail the current versions of the legislation because they were concerned they would lead to censorship and lengthy litigation.

Earlier on Friday, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid postponed a vote on one bill that was set for Tuesday until several issues are resolved.

South Carolina Primary Election Quotes (ContributorNetwork)

Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina presidential preference primary in dramatic fashion. In the week leading to the election, the supposed front-runner was Mitt Romney. Then Gingrich surged ahead and won more than 40 percent of the vote in the Palmetto State. The New York Times reports Gingrich had 40 percent of the vote and 23 delegates.

Here's are quotes from the four major candidates on the night of the South Carolina primary.

* "We want to run not a Republican campaign, we want to run an American campaign because we are optimistic about the future because America has always been optimistic about the future. If we unleash the American people, we can rebuild the America that we love." -- Newt Gingrich, giving his victory speech in South Carolina. Politico reports his tone was much different than after the Iowa caucus. Gingrich graciously accepted the speeches of the other three candidates.

* "In recent weeks, the choice within our party has also come into stark focus. President Obama has no experience running a business and running a state. Our party can't be led to victory by someone who also has ever led a business and never run a state. Our campaign will be about the businesses I helped start, not the bills I tried to pass. Our president has divided the nation, engaged in class warfare, and attacked the free enterprise system that has made America the envy of the world. We cannot defeat that president with a candidate that has joined in that very assault on free enterprise." -- Mitt Romney in his concession speech, according to CBS News . He was attacking Gingrich's credentials for being president as well as Obama's work at the White House. Romney came in second in South Carolina after finishing first in New Hampshire.

* "Three states, three winners, what a great country. Let me assure you, we will go to Florida, and then to Arizona, and Colorado, and.... It's a wide open race!" -- Rick Santorum on his future plans, according to ABC News . Florida is the next primary election on Jan. 31. Santorum came in third in South Carolina after winning the Iowa caucus on Jan. 3.

* "This is the beginning of a long, hard job. We will continue to do this. There's no doubt about it. In the beginning, I thought it would just be promotion of a cause. Then it dawned on me, when you win elections and you win delegates, that's the way you promote a cause." -- Rep. Ron Paul of Texas on his future plans for the GOP nominating process. Politico reports he finished fourth in South Carolina, the only one of the mainstream candidates who hasn't won a primary contest yet.

Romney says he'll attend debates in Florida (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Mitt Romney says he will attend the next GOP presidential debates in Florida, which is next up on the election calendar.

After last weekend's two debates in South Carolina, advisers to the former Massachusetts governor had said the candidate hadn't committed to any more campaign debates.

But Romney said Saturday, on the day when South Carolinians are voting in their state's GOP primary, that he will be at the Tampa debate, and advisers say he also will participate in the Jacksonville debate on Thursday.

His commitment to the debate might be a sign that he doesn't think he will do as well as first thought in South Carolina against rival Newt Gingrich and will need to continue the fight in Florida.

The Florida primary is Jan. 31.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Mitt Romney is heading into primary day conceding that he'll win some and lose some.

Romney on Friday acknowledged the contest here is "neck-and-neck" and said he expects to lose "some primaries" to rival Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker.

As voters head to the polls Saturday, Romney and Gingrich both planned to appear at the same breakfast restaurant in the morning. Both campaigns refused to change their schedules Friday night, potentially setting up a face-off between the two men ahead of the polls closing.

The past week has been an abrupt reversal of fortune for the former Massachusetts governor, who landed here last Wednesday after a big victory in New Hampshire and what was then a narrow win in Iowa.

But this week the Iowa GOP reversed his win there after problems with the vote count, and he's been dogged by questions about releasing his tax returns. And instead of emerging from South Carolina with three wins and a seeming lock on the GOP nomination, Romney and his team are now acknowledging they could lose here. That would leave the putative front-runner with just one early state win heading into Florida's Jan. 31 primary.

Romney's campaign planned at least two campaign stops Saturday ahead of polls closing. He planned to visit his campaign headquarters and Tommy's Country Ham House, where Gingrich also planned to stop. Romney was to end the day in Columbia, the state capital.

Consequences Of Lapsed Coverage On Auto Insurance Quotes

Finding decent auto insurance rates is already tough even with a clean driving past. Usually insurers are looking for a straightforward policyholder that will not cause them much trouble. They will discover any irregularities pretty quickly. Companies will not generally spare time and resources to dig deep into the reasons behind gaps in coverage while considering an applicant. Essentially drivers need to build a decent driving history before they are offered cheap car insurance quotes. It is possible that any lengthy breaks on the driver records may require you to start all over again.

Obviously it would be harsh to penalize a driver if the policy was lapsed only a day or two. Understandably, you may have been away at the time you received the renewal terms. Getting your coverage reinstated as soon as you are back may be sufficient. Most companies will restart the cover as soon as you confirm and pay the premium. But you are advised to check alternative quotes before renewing with the current insurer. It would not matter that you are already without cover for few days as it would only take you half an hour to go through all your options online.

The real issues will start when you go without any vehicle insurance coverage for about a month. By this time, your insurer will notify DMV of the fact that you do not have any cover. Possibly DMV will follow it up with some questionnaires about your car and insurance. If you still own the car and are driving, you will have to buy at least liabilities insurance. This would be the point state insurance authorities are trying to establish. You will need to fill the forms in due course to avoid getting penalties for non compliance.

Definitely, it is not cool to keep driving the car without insurance. The risks of paying the damages caused to third parties are too high to be taking on your own. Plus you will be facing penalties for breaking the law which enforces minimum liabilities coverage on every driver. Otherwise, you can easily clarify the position with DMV if you have sold the car or taken it off the road. Regardless of how short it is, a lapse in the policy is visible to alternative insurers and authorities.

Quite a few companies may ignore positive driving history once couple of months gap opens up without insurance cover. The most common reason for lapsed policies is missing payment. They are not usually keen to offer low premiums for drivers showing signs of sloppiness. Especially if you have a great driving history going back to a few years, you should not risk it by allowing a policy lapse. It would make sense to talk to the auto insurance company about keeping the coverage. This may be beneficial even when you are not driving or currently do not own a car.

Consider the possibility that you may sell the car and intend to buy a new one shortly. But you may feel that you do not need coverage until then. Actually, your insurer will lower the coverage to minimal level until you buy the replacement automobile when you talk to them. This might be a better option than risking to lose driving history and great discounts as a result.

What?s the Best Way To Get Users To Embrace Mass Transit?

Who is right? These views may not be so divergent as they initially seem, but Walker?s book makes the strong case that the system half of the equation cannot be ignored. As befits someone who has spent decades in small, formerly smoke-filled rooms with civic officials trying to implement working transit systems, Walker is a realist, and Human Transit is a spirited guide?prescriptive but with a righteous dash of polemic?to what we get wrong about transit. ?In many urban regions,? he writes, ?support for public transit is wide but shallow.? People generally like the idea of transit (as characterized by the Onion headline, ?98 Percent of Americans Support Public Transit for Others?), but much of our society?s experience and understanding of transit, not to mention our willingness to pay for it, is limited. The very fact that most of us drive, argues Walker, casts a subtle, but powerful, influence onto transit thinking. ?In most debates about proposed rapid transit lines,? he writes, ?the speed of the proposed service gets more political attention than how frequently it runs, even though frequency, which determines waiting time, often matters more than speed in determining how long your trip will take.? Drivers don?t wonder when their cars are going to show up.

Civic storm brews over Joplin 'tornado tourism'

Joe Raedle / Getty Images

An American flag stands among the debris from homes that were destroyed by a massive tornado on May 27, 2011, in Joplin, Mo.

By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

It?s been eight months since Joplin, Mo., was devastated by a tornado, but a new storm is apparently brewing in the Midwestern city. Recently, the city?s Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) began offering a map designed to facilitate visiting the city?s most devastated places.

The maps, which combine facts on the tornado, points of twister-related interest and images of destruction, is being made available at welcome centers and hotel front desks. It offers a visual chronicle of a disaster that left 161 dead, thousands homeless and approximately 4,000 homes destroyed. (Images of the map can be seen on the Facebook page of Joplin radio station NewsTalk 1310.)

?We?re not in the market of promoting the tornado area,? Patrick Tuttle, director of the Joplin CVB, told msnbc.com ?The map was the result of requests for an educational piece on the safest ways to see the amazing amount of destruction.?

?I can understand the idea of the map,? local resident Aaron DuRall told msnbc.com, ?but that doesn?t make it any less tasteless.?

For DuRall, a local photographer who created an anti-tornado-tourism Facebook page called Joplin Citizens Against Tornado Tours, the issue is one of timing.

?If you?re talking two to five years down the road, where the city has been rebuilt, I could understand it,? he said. ?But to want to have people view where people lost their lives less than a year afterwards seems incredibly insensitive to me.?

The controversy over the map was further fueled after local TV news station KY3 reported that the city was also planning to develop an iPhone app and bus tours of the disaster zone. An addendum to the story has Tuttle telling the station that those concepts were only ideas and that no plans are in the works.

Whether or not such concepts come to fruition, the controversy is merely the latest example of the kind of ?disaster tourism? that?s given birth to everything from bus tours of post-Katrina New Orleans to post-devastation excursions to Mt. Merapi, the Indonesian volcano that killed hundreds when it erupted in 2010.

As for Joplin, both Tuttle and DuRall agree that any plans to showcase the tornado?s destruction must balance timing, the rebuilding process and the need to encourage visitation and the revenues that come with it.

?People still have not totally healed and it will take years to do so,? said Tuttle. ?But we?ve got to make a decision on when to start telling the story.???

Israel says "very far" from decision to attack Iran (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday any decision about an Israeli attack on Iran was "very far off."

Barak was speaking on Israel's Army Radio before a planned visit Thursday by U.S. armed forces chief General Martin Dempsey that has triggered speculation Washington will press Israel to delay any action against Tehran's nuclear program.

Barak's remarks suggest that Iran, which denies trying to make a nuclear bomb while defying international censure of its secretive uranium enrichment and missile projects, has not yet advanced past what Israel might deem a critical threshold.

Asked if the United States has asked Israel to tell them before any assault against Iran, Barak said, "We haven't made any decision to do this. This entire thing is very far off."

Barak also hinted that Israel - presumed to have the only nuclear warheads in the region - was coordinating with Washington its plans to deal with Tehran's nuclear project.

"I don't think our ties with the United States are such that they have no idea what we are talking about," he said.

When asked whether "very far off" meant weeks or months, Barak said, "I wouldn't want to provide any estimates. It's certainly not urgent." The March leadership election in Israel's main opposition Kadima party "will happen sooner," he said.

Iran says its nuclear work is solely for peaceful purposes. Barak said that, were the Islamic Republic to decide to enrich uranium to weapons-grade purity, it would first have to call off cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency.

"Such an action would provide solid proof that indeed time has run out and this would be liable to either worsen the sanctions or other action against them," Barak said.

"They don't want this (more sanctions or other action). That's why they don't do it, not because they have given up their plan or because they have ceased advancing to achieve immunity for their operations," he said, the latter referring to Iran's activating an enrichment plant in a fortified mountain.

Asked for an assessment on how long it would take Iran to build a nuclear warhead, were it to make that decision, Barak said, "It's not a matter of years. There are those who say a year, or a year and half, it does not make much of difference."

"I don't want to relate to it (weaponization) as though tomorrow it will happen," he said.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors are monitoring all nuclear sites that Iran has declared but the West fears that Iran may build other sites in secret.

Western powers also worry that Iran will gradually enrich uranium to higher levels under IAEA inspection to reduce the time needed to process further to weapons grade, so that when and if it decides to, it can quickly take that stockpile and turn it into weapons grade material.

Dempsey, the top U.S. military officer, is due to travel to Tel Aviv for talks in which Iran is certain to be one of the main topics. It will be Dempsey's first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September.

In a November 30 interview with Reuters, Dempsey said he did not know whether Israel would alert the United States ahead of any unilateral military action against Iran. He also acknowledged differences in perspective between the United States and Israel over the best way to handle Iran and its nuclear program.

T-Rob, Taylor lead No. 7 Kansas over No. 3 Baylor (AP)

LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Baylor sauntered into Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night with a No. 3 ranking, a perfect record and all the swagger that comes with the best start in school history.

The Bears left like so many other teams with designs on knocking the Jayhawks from their Big 12 perch: with a humbling defeat.

Thomas Robinson had 27 points and 14 rebounds, Tyshawn Taylor matched a career-high with 28 points and the seventh-ranked Jayhawks cruised to a 92-74 victory, proving once more that the road to a conference championship goes through Kansas.

"Start with their leadership. Thomas Robinson showed why he's a player of the year candidate. Tyshawn Taylor was outstanding," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "Early on we didn't have some success in the paint, got away from it. From there we couldn't stop them all night long."

It was the first loss for Baylor in football or men's and women's basketball since Oct. 29 ? a span of 40 games. It also ruined the longest winning streak in school history.

"Their fans got into the game," said Perry Jones III, who had 18 points to lead Baylor. "We still tried to stay together and not let the noise affect us."

Quincy Miller added 17 points, Quincy Acy had 14 and Pierre Jackson had 11 points and 11 assists, but the long and lean Bears were dominated inside and had no answer for the combination of Robinson and Taylor, one of the best inside-outside tandems in the nation.

Robinson overpowered the Baylor front line with an array of rim-rattling dunks and short-range jumpers, while Taylor hit four 3-pointers and doled out six assists.

The outcome left No. 1 Syracuse and No. 12 Murray State as the only undefeated teams in Division I.

"If you let it affect you and affect you next game, you've got no chance," Drew said. "They did what they had to do. They defended the home court."

Travis Releford and Elijah Johnson added 11 points each for the Jayhawks (15-3, 5-0), who won their 16th straight game at Allen Fieldhouse and 10th in a row at home over the Bears.

Kansas is 17-2 against them all-time.

Facing its fourth top-10 opponent of the season, the veteran Jayhawks swarmed the younger Bears with pressure from the opening tip, making life miserable on both ends of the court.

Robinson provided the early boost, scoring eight of his 12 first-half points in the opening 6-plus minutes. The run included a dazzling one-handed dunk off an alley-oop feed from Taylor that set Twitter ablaze and generated a roar inside Allen Fieldhouse that could be heard in Kansas City.

"He pressed the up button and he went and got it," Taylor said with a grin.

The Bears answered the first salvo with a 16-5 run of their own.

Jones started it with a jumper, and Gary Franklin curled in a 3-pointer for his only points of the game. By the time Jackson knocked down another 3 and Acy added a basket inside, Baylor had pulled ahead 27-22 and Self asked for a timeout.

It sure seemed to settle down the Jayhawks.

Robinson scored on a nifty spin move inside and Jeff Withey added two free throws to start a 17-2 run to end the half. Taylor scored 11 of the final 13 points, including a 3 from the top of the key with Jackson staring him down in the closing seconds to make it 39-29.

"It's going to come down to the best players on each team making plays. That's what happened," Taylor said. "We came out in attack mode, and kept it on all game."

Jackson hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 39-32 in the opening minute of the second half, and Brady Heslip added another 3 a couple of minutes later to make it 43-37 with 17:32 to go.

That was as close as Baylor got.

Kansas scored on its next seven possessions, another dunk by Robinson pushing the lead to 59-42 with 13:04 left. The lead swelled to 19 when Taylor scored on an acrobatic scooping layup, missed the ensuing foul shot, and then hit a 3-pointer from the wing after Kansas got the offensive rebound.

Robinson's basket with 6:54 left made it a 20-point game.

"We missed some jump shots they got some run-outs, we didn't get back. They do such a good job in transition in this building," Drew said. "They feed off the atmosphere."

By the time Robinson checked out with just over a minute to go, the crowd that had jammed the Jayhawks' historic field house to the rafters ? and generated crowd noise registering at 114 decibels at the tip ? was on their feet and giving him a standing ovation.

It was the first time an unbeaten team had come to Kansas during Big 12 play. The last time it happened with a current league member was on Jan. 21, 1986, when Oklahoma came into the game 17-0.

Just like Baylor, the Sooners went home 17-1.

"Early on they were good, right now they're even better," Drew said, "and I think the nation saw how tough they are. But that's what's great about this league. Night in and night out, you're going to face good teams, and if you don't play well and they play well, you've got no chance."
