Even though you are being modded up by the usual suspects and I am being modded down, everything you said above is pseudoscientific crap. Sorry. Genetic algorithms have already shown that natural selection can operate on pre-life patterns? This is pure unmitigated BS on the face of it.

You're modded down because you're simply ignorant, and refuse to open your mind to new knowledge. I feel bad for you. You seek absolute truth -- Proof of exactly what happened. There is no absolute truth in science. This is where you fall short on the science stick. We don't have the absolute evidence -- It's gone. The oldest of Earth's crust has been reabsorbed into the mantle. This happened billions of years ago, but it was after life formed here.

Application of one set of inferences and conclusions based on observations to other similar systems is not bullshit. Not any more bullshit than applying math like Information theory to descriptions of biological processes, like evolution. Selection pressure is being used in many ways, both natural and artificially. That we can do so artificially indicates that such could occur naturally as well. In short: What we see in a lab may be applied in the rest of the world. It's a basic tenet of science.

We apply evolutionary concepts in simulations because it's cheaper, but what this tells us is that it's possible for life to emerge. If we did have the time to sit and wait, we could put molecules into a specific soup in the right conditions, and eventually life would emerge. If you're lucky, have a big enough environment, and have enough time, then sentient life can emerge. We may not have the exact recipe, but we've gotten similar results with so many other ingredients that the possibility is undeniably in the favor for the emergence of life in this way -- We're not even sure if the recipe was brewed here, it If not here, then elsewhere and seeded here, but we're sure enough about the mechanism of selection that we can say that it played a key role in the formation of life.

What's interesting to me is the application of information theory to the Universe. If our universe were as you say, having too much entropic forces that would destroy all complexity before it got complex enough to be called alive, then life could not have formed. You also don't want a Universe with too little chaos; Not enough randomness and you get a monoculture -- Something that just forms then degrades over time once, with no speciation -- Like crystals. However, the parameters of this Universe are such that there is enough chaos to allow complexity to arise, but not so much randomness that it can not arise.

IMO, Earth being in the gulf between spiral arms is a huge benefit to the rise of life. Less dramatic life eradicating entropic events, like gamma ray bursts. That's where we should look for other life: Cradled between the arms of the galaxies -- They should have sent a poet.

EU officials seek more private investment in jobs

DUBLIN (AP) ? With many of the European Union's economies mired in stagnation, EU officials are seeking to emulate part of the U.S. model for creating growth and jobs by fostering more private investment in businesses.

Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan said Saturday that in the United States banks account for only 25 percent of external financing for businesses. In Europe, he said, the proportion is the opposite ? 70 to 75 percent of business financing comes from banks. He spoke at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of EU finance ministers in Dublin.

"There was a shared view that we must begin to take tangible action to assist in developing a more balanced financial system in which banks, institutional investors and public authorities all play a role in supporting long-term investment in growth and jobs," Noonan said.

This is important, he said, as many small and medium-sized businesses in the EU lack access to capital. Because Ireland currently holds the EU's rotating six-month presidency, Noonan chaired the meeting.

In January, unemployment across the 17 EU countries that use the euro hit a record 11.9 percent, with nearly 19 million people out of work. The unemployment rate for young people was 24.2 percent. And the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, predicts the unemployment rate will rise further this year.

The finance ministers also agreed to push for completion of a banking union that would create a single set of rules for banks in the union, a single supervisory mechanism and uniform procedures for winding down banks that fail. And they renewed their pledge to work together to fight tax evasion ? a practice they said many people found particularly galling at a time when government cutbacks and tax increases are wreaking havoc with their personal finances.

Online juries help curb bad gamer behaviour

In the heat of the moment, online players often hurl abuse at one another ? crowd-based justice can help bring them back into line

THERE is a place where 75 people die every second, hacked to bits with giant flaming swords or blasted into the air with powerful magic. Welcome to League of Legends (LoL), an online world in which 3 million gamers are playing online at any given time.

Games are competitive and tempers often run high, so abusive messages are commonplace. But a new system has shown that not only can such bad behaviour be dealt with by the crowd ? it is also easy to modify.

"We can create behavioural profiles for every player in the game," says Jeff Lin, lead designer of social systems at Riot Games, which manages LoL. The profiles measure how many times users curse or insult their teammates and opponents during a game. It is not just about filleting out the handful of regularly abusive players among LoL's 30 million subscribers: most bad behaviour consists of outbursts from players who are normally well behaved.

"The question is how do we stop the spread of bad behaviour?" Lin says. A system called Tribunal, demonstrated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Game Lab last month, could be the answer. "Tribunal aggregates all the negative behaviour cases, including chat logs, and bubbles them to the top," Lin explains.

These cases are presented back to the community in the game's forums, where other players vote on whether the behaviour was acceptable or not. Particularly egregious cases, judged by votes, can lead to the offending player being banned.

"If players say 'fag' or the N-word, those cases are the most highly punished," says Lin. The system has also led to new standards ? swearing is now allowed in LoL, but not if it is directed at another player.

The Riot team has also tested other ways of nudging player behaviour. They found that simple messages, displayed during load screens, can have a big effect on player behaviour in the subsequent game. For example, advising players that their teammates would perform worse if they harassed them after a mistake resulted in an 11 per cent reduction in offensive language in the subsequent game, compared with when no tips were shown.

Lin says that systems like Tribunal could be useful if applied to other online systems. Web communities like Reddit already rely on the users themselves to shape the community, and to down-vote offensive posts from view. These mechanisms allow societal norms to emerge in online communities where none were before, just as juries have for hundreds of years, says Cliff Lampe at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. "This really helps to shape sites," he says. "It used to be that sites would rise and fall quickly, like MySpace, but these social structures lead to more sustainable sites."

Pierre Garcon started his NFL career as one of Peyton Manning?s receivers before leaving for Washington last year and playing with Robert Griffin III. And Garcon says he sees a lot of similarities in the two quarterbacks.

But Garcon says that while Griffin has many of the same positive traits as Manning, Griffin?s athleticism allows him to attack opposing defenses in a different way.

?He can be just as good as Peyton,? Garcon said on NFL AM. ?Peyton?s very skilled with his arm, Robert is skilled with his arm and his legs, so that?s what makes him more dynamic and more dangerous.?

Garcon said he sees a lot of the same traits between Manning and Griffin in the way they lead their teams.

?They are very similar,? Garcon said. ?Quarterbacks are natural leaders, they take control of the huddle, their meetings, their teammates around them, communicate with all the players, from offensive linemen to receivers and running backs. They?re similar to each other. Robert?s going to be very good, and just as good as Peyton.?

That?s high praise, from the only receiver who has caught passes from both Manning and Griffin.
